The use of aromatic plant oils dates back over 5,000 years to ancient civilisations such as Egypt, China, and India, where herbs & scented oils were used for healing, beauty rituals & spiritual ceremonies. The term 'aromatherapy' itself was coined in the 1930s by French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé after he discovered the restorative effects of lavender oil on burns. Since then, aromatherapy has evolved into a respected complementary therapy, combining traditional plant knowledge with modern holistic wellness practices.
Understanding Essential Oil Notes:
Essential oils are often described in .notes,' similar to perfume, which refer to how quickly their scent develops & fades — & how they affect the body & mood.
Top Notes – Light, fresh & uplifting aromas that are noticed first but evaporate quickly. These get to work straight away & can last up to 12 - 24 hours.
Examples: Lemon, Grapefruit, Eucalyptus, Peppermint.
Common effects: Energising, refreshing, clearing.
Middle Notes (Heart Notes) – Softer, balancing scents that form the core of the blend last longer than top notes (around 24 - 36 hours)
Examples: Lavender, Geranium, Chamomile, Rosemary.
Common effects: Harmonising, calming, emotionally balancing.
Base Notes – Deep, rich aromas that linger the longest (around 36 - 72+ hours) & help anchor the blend.
Examples: Sandalwood, Patchouli, Frankincense, Cedarwood.
Common effects: Grounding, relaxing, comforting.
By combining these notes, an aromatherapy massage creates a balanced fragrance profile while also enhancing the therapeutic benefits of the treatment. These essential oils are diluted into a 1% or 2% concentration due to their potency.
